Cold Air Stunts Growth

The customer has a high-speed spindle package that they sell for retrofitting older machines with high speed milling capacity. The problem is that the bearings inside the high speed spindle housing get warm which causes the machine parts to grow in the Y axis up to as much as .020". Growth up to .008" is acceptable. The customer does not want to use a traditional water cooling system that is available. So, customer wants to look into purging the bearing areas with cold air from a vortex tube to keep the bearings cool and keep the growth of the various parts in the spindle area to a minimum. (2) Model 3208 Vortex Tubes were placed strategically onto the spindle housing so as to achieve maximum effect for the cooling of the bearing areas.
