FAQ

  • What is the difference between "CFM" and "SCFM"?

SCFM = Standard Cubic Feet per Minute. This is 1 cubic foot of free air at standard atmospheric temperature and pressure (the standard conditions are usually 68°F and 14.7 PSIA).

CFM = Cubic Feet per Minute. This is sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably with SCFM meaning free air. Unless the pressure and temperature are specified with CFM, the actual volume of gas flow cannot be determined.

  • Can I pulse/cycle the compressed air to your products?

Yes, EXAIR is committed to the more efficient use of compressed air and recommends limiting the use of compressed air for only the duration it is required to perform a specific function.

Cycling is efficient because EXAIR product’s effects are virtually instantaneous. Cycling will reduce overall air use for more cost effective operation. With the use of an EXAIR Electronic Flow Control (EFC), you can control the flow of air with any one of the 16 programmable modes.

  • What does "SLPM" stand for?

SLPM stands for Standard Liters per Minute. Liters per Minute is a way to express the volume of airflow in metric terms.  1 SCFM = 28.3 SLPM.

  • Can I test your products?

Yes, every U.S. and Canadian customer who places an order can take advantage of the EXAIR Corporation Guarantee which states:

"EXAIR unconditionally guarantees its cataloged products for 30 days. If you are not satisfied for any reason within that time you may return the product for full credit with no restocking charge. Of course, this is in addition to our "Built To Last" warranty."

We would like you to call an Application Engineer at 800-903-9247 before returning a product so they may work with you to try to solve your problem and make your application successful.

  • How do EXAIR products compare to blower operated products?

EXAIR products compared to blowers have:

    • Lower purchase costs
    • Very little if any maintenance
    • Lower noise levels, well below OSHA requirements
    • Infinitely variable force and flow rates
    • Simple, compact installation – no cumbersome ductwork or noise containment cabinets

  • My line pressure is 80-100 PSI and the EXAIR product is not performing well. Why?

In the majority of cases, poor performance can be attributed to restrictive air lines, fitting, quick connects or insufficient air supply.  Although the system pressure may be at 100 PSIG, pressure at the product will be considerably lower if it is being starved for air.  Check the installation and maintenance sheet that came with the product for proper air line sizes.

A good test is to install a pressure gauge at the inlet of the product.  Check the static pressure (with the product off) against the dynamic pressure (with the product running).  Any significant pressure drop is an indication of improperly sized air lines, a restriction in the line or the compressor hasn’t the capacity to supply the compressed air needed.

If the dynamic air pressure is within the operating range of the product, then dirt and contamination should be checked next.  If the nozzle(s) plug up, they do not operate properly.

If the above does not solve your problem, contact an Application Engineer at 1-800-903-9247.

  • Why should I install EXAIR products to my existing compressed air applications?

EXAIR products are engineered to maximize compressed air efficiency and reduce compressed air consumption which will save money normally spent to generate more compressed air. EXAIR products will also provide additional worker safety by supplying OSHA compliant products for dead end pressure [29 CFR 1910.242(b)] and noise reduction [29 CFR 1910.95(a)].

  • Are your blowoff products OSHA approved?

Although OSHA is not an approval agency, EXAIR products do meet OSHA noise and pressure requirements.

  • What are the temperature and pressure ratings of the Sintered Bronze Mufflers?

They are rated for temperatures from 35°F to 300°F. Maximum Operating Pressure is 300psig.

  • Can I use your products with nitrogen or other gases?

Yes, EXAIR products can be used with any inert gas.

  • I have some parts to cool.  Which EXAIR product should I use?

There are many parameters that need to be addressed in order to properly recommend an EXAIR cooling product, such as initial temperature, final temperature desired, size of the part, etc.  Please consult an Application Engineer at 1-800-903-9247 for a recommendation for your application.

  • Can I use a blower to power your products?

No, a blower cannot provide enough pressure to run EXAIR products.

  • I need to blow off my parts. Which EXAIR product should I use?

There are many parameters that need to be addressed in order to properly recommend an EXAIR product for blowoff, such as the part configuration, speed of travel, etc. Please consult an Application Engineer at 1-800-903-9247 for a recommendation for your application.

  • What sound level do your products produce?

EXAIR has done extensive engineering to reduce the noise levels on all products. As you page through the catalog or look at the various sections on the web site, you will notice that a sound level has been given at a standard working distance of 3' for most of the products. In some blowoff applications, the noise level can be higher due to the part configuration that might produce wind shear. No sound level is given in this case.

  • What if I need something that isn't shown in your catalog? Will EXAIR manufacture a special unit for me?

Yes, EXAIR is a manufacturer, and we have the ability to alter the product for specific requirements (odd lengths of Air Knives, preset Vortex Tubes, special ionizers, etc.). We can also make a completely new design for a product. Please contact one of our Application Engineers to discuss your application.
