FAQ

  • What are the temperature and pressure ratings of the Sintered Bronze Mufflers?

They are rated for temperatures from 35°F to 300°F. Maximum Operating Pressure is 300psig.

  • What viscosity of fluid can your Reversible Drum Vac pump?

The Reversible Drum Vac is effective on a wide range of fluids, from water and water-based coolants to motor oil. The pumping rate is affected by the viscosity of the fluid. Water can be pumped at a rate of approximately 37 gallons per minute at 80 PSIG inlet pressure. Hydraulic oil can be pumped at a rate of approximately 10 gallons per minute, and 15W40 motor oil can be pumped at a rate of approximately 7 gallons per minute.

  • What lengths do you offer for your Super Ion Air Knife and Standard Ion Air Knife?

We offer one-piece lengths from 3" to 108" for our Super Ion Air Knife and 3" to 48" lengths for our Standard Ion Air Knife. Custom lengths are also available - contact an Application Engineer for assistance.

  • What material is an Air Knife made from?

EXAIR’s Super Air Knives are stocked on our shelf in:

    • 6061 aluminum
    • 303 stainless steel
    • 316 stainless steel
    • PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride)

We also manufacture non-stock Super Air Knives from PVC upon request.

Standard and Full Flow Air Knives are stocked on the shelf in:

    • 6061 aluminum
    • 303 stainless steel

  • Why should I avoid using a non-contact temp gun (infrared heat gun) to determine my cabinet temps?

The "Temp Guns" read surface temperature of the material at which they are aimed, instead of air temperature.  In order to accurately calculate the internal heat load of the cabinet, we need to know the current external and internal air temperatures of the cabinet. EXAIR recommends a simple air temperature thermometer.

  • How do I change the mode of operation on the Summing Remote Display?

There is a small button on the side of the housing used to toggle between the display modes.

  • Can I use your products with nitrogen or other gases?

Yes, EXAIR products can be used with any inert gas.

  • If I have an Ion Bar and want to add compressed air, can I?

A Super Air Knife or Standard Air Knife can easily be retrofitted to your existing Ionizing Bar.  If you know the length of the bar you currently have, we can specify the parts you will need in order to convert the Ion Bar to a Super Ion Air Knife or a Standard Ion Air Knife.  Please contact an Application Engineer at 1-800-903-9247.

  • Can I vacuum dry materials with your Reversible Drum Vac?

No, the Reversible Drum Vac is designed as a liquid vacuum. Dry materials are vacuumed using our Chip Vac or Heavy Duty Dry Vac.

  • How do I know what Cold Fraction my Vortex Tube is set to?

There are several ways to determine the Cold Fraction you are currently using on your Vortex Tube.  One is to utilize the Performance Data chart in the Vortex Tube of section of our catalog or website which displays the temperature drop and rise of the Vortex Tube at different temperatures and supply pressures. You can measure the temperature of the cold air exiting the Vortex Tube and compare it to our charts. The air temp should be measured immediately out of the Vortex Tube as the air stream will warm as it mixes with ambient air.

The other method is to use an air flow meter to measure the volume of air both going into and out of the unit and comparing the hot or cold flow of the unit.  Comparing the hot or cold flow rate to the total will give you the relative cold or hot fraction setting.

  • How can I mount EXAIR’s Air Knives?

    You have three mounting options:

    1. EXAIR manufactures the Universal Air Knife Mounting System which can be used for all styles of Air Knives and Ion Air Knives.
    2. Use existing mounting holes/capscrews.
      1. The Super Air Knife has 1/4-20 tapped holes on 2" centers along the length of the Air Knife which can be used for mounting.
      2. With the Super or the Standard Air Knife you may choose to replace the existing capscrews with longer 1/4-20 threaded fasteners for mounting.
      3. The Full-Flow Air Knife has 10-24 tapped holes on 1-1/2" centers along the length of the knife which can be used for mounting, or you can replace the existing 10-24 capscrews with longer threaded fasteners.
    3. For Super and Standard Air Knives, you can hard plumb the air lines to both ends and use the piping to support the Air Knives. Plumbing to both ends is required for Air Knives 24" and longer, but is also perfectly acceptable for shorter lengths.

  • Can the thermostat be adjusted to maintain an internal temperature different than the preset 95° F?

Yes, in order to do so you will need liquid at the desired set temperature, a continuity meter, and a small flat head screwdriver.  The process for adjusting the thermostat is covered in the product's Installation and Maintenance guide.

  • How long is the cable that connects the Summing Remote Display to the Digital Flowmeter?

The stock cable length from EXAIR is 50 linear ft.  (15.2m).  This is the maximum recommended length for the cable.

  • Can I use a Reversible Drum Vac on a Poly Drum?

The Reversible Drum Vacs are designed for, and specified for use on, steel drums only.

  • Which Vortex Tube do I use?

Vortex Tubes are offered in three sizes with a variety of cooling capacities. Many common applications that incorporate Vortex Tubes are shown in the EXAIR Catalog and on our web site. If your particular application is not shown, but is similar to one of those described, it is best to order one of the EXAIR Cooling Kits. The Cooling Kits provide a Vortex Tube with all of the associated generators and accessories that allow you to experiment with various flows and temperatures. It is best to discuss your requirements with one of the EXAIR Application Engineers. They can help you select the size for your application.

  • What is a Plumbing Kit?

The Plumbing Kit is an accessory item we offer for Air Knives that are 24" (610mm) in length or longer.  Any Air Knife that is 24" (610mm) or longer should be plumbed with compressed air fed into two or three inlets, depending on the length. The Plumbing Kit will connect the necessary air inlets of the knife with the properly sized hose and fittings. It also results in only one individual connection you will have to supply your air into, simplifying the installation of the knife. You can choose to install the plumbing kit or have EXAIR install it at the factory. The Plumbing Kit is to help ease the installation of the longer Air Knives.

  • What muffler do I need with my NEMA 12 Cabinet Cooler® System (mufflers are included w/ NEMA 4/4X)?

A NEMA 12 Cabinet Cooler® System has built in sound attenuation and does not normally require additional muffling. If more attenuation is desired, the optional muffler for the Cabinet Cooler® Systems is part number 4902.

  • Is it possible to have my Digital Sound Level Meter calibrated?

Yes, we offer an NIST traceable calibration and repair for damaged units for the Digital Sound Level Meters.  Please contact EXAIR for a quote.
